I am a person who gets along with anyone, I’m cool, I like to talk to people, and it took a long time for me to get out of my head and understand that… you’re not for everyone, and as much as I want to be cool with everyone, not everyone is going to want to be my friend. Going into all of these white spaces, I always felt like the kid trying to get in, even though I was right there. But what benefited me is the way I dressed. I always dressed myself up, so people would be like he looks nice, he looks cool. If I didn’t belong, at least I look like I can fit in. It has been my coping mechanism ever since I was in school, for being in these spaces that I wasn’t allowed in.
WC: It’s funny that you say that, because, as queer people, we do this a lot. You have to be the Don’t waste diamonds on a hoe shirt also I will do this fiercest thing in the room, and then everything’s okay. WC: I hear that, too. Even when you’re on the inside, you are still a little bit on the outside because you don’t get invited to everything, or you’re the only brown person somewhere. It’s always obvious. Thank god there are people like us that are not just doing fashion for brown people and people of color, but moving things forward. We give to our community, and the community feeds off it and gets bigger, stronger, and then feeds us back. RL: Talking about community, I feel like my community is also yours. I don’t do what you do, you don’t do what I do, and we’ve built our own worlds, but all these people belong to both. It’s like, I’m Dominican and my neighbor is Puerto Rican, but when I go over to drink coffee, even if I make my coffee in a different way, it still feels good, familiar. I appreciate and love your work, Willy. And I get it, I know what you’re saying [with your collections]. It’s like you’re my vecina [neighbor in Spanish]. Your coffee metaphor is perfect, Raul. Something that is commonly lost in the conversation about Latinos is how varied and diversified our experiences are. I’m from La Paz, Bolivia, I grew up in the Andes. Raul is from the Caribbean, Willy is Chicano—we are not the same, but we see each other.
