So it is understandable why Akhuetie felt drawn to such loaded and symbolic material. The frame of a mirror is essentially hot-pink braids constructed with varying levels of thickness and time-tested techniques. After a period of experimentation, a large swath of Akhuetie’s visually compelling art was featured in her first solo exhibition at The Cockatoo in 2021 titled, “We Need Some More Black in Hair.”

She declines to divulge specifics on her intricate and time-consuming construction techniques. One thing Akhuetie is not keeping under wraps, however? Her ambitions. Akhuetie says she does not necessarily envision the garments featured in Bundles of Paradise as ready-to-wear, per say. Which is why she has turned down multiple requests from people looking to buy a piece, as she is selective about who she accepts commissions from. In her opinion, these are art pieces deserving of a big moment—like a music video or performance. “Obviously Beyoncé would be sick,” she says, of her dream client. Another aspirational collaboration? Elton John. “To do a custom braided piano for him,” she says. “I think that would be so sick.”
